The diagnostics for the newer S-class are different from the W210 E-class, so I'm not sure how to access them. The overwhelmingly likely reason for EC light being stuck on is that you need a recharge. There are a few other conditions (namely faulty sensors) that can cause the light to remain lit but they are pretty rare.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Yes, that appears to be the entire kit. The blower motor regulator for your car is no longer manufactured because Mercedes wants everyone to upgrade the entire blower motor system to a newer design which costs about $1000 for parts alone. The W140 S-class blower regulator sells for about $100 and can be adapted to fit your car. Google "W210 blower motor regulator replacement" for a DIY guide on how to do this.
I still recommend that you replace the evaporator temperature sensor, although that is not what is causing the fan speed problem.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Hey Blake,

Thanks for the information so far.

Sorry for the lack of information.... I was so focused on getting the numbers right, I left that part out! What I am experiencing is related to how much air the blower blows. It seems as though it does not push as much air as it should. It does vary the amount of air when I change the fan setting, but even on maximum, it does not push out as much air as I think it should.

I have a 1999 E320.

Thanks for your insight.

Thomas

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

If the REST function doesn't work and you can access the codes, that's a problem with the climate control unit -- perhaps even the button itself.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Art,

There are two possibilities here. One is that the blower regulator has gone bad and is powering the fan in the absence of a control signal. The other option is that dash climate control unit is faulty. The way to tell this apart is to put a voltmeter on the electrical contacts when the problem occurs and see what it reads.
+ control voltage & zero blower motor voltage = regulator problem
Zero control voltage & + blower motor voltage = regulator problem

If control voltage is present when the engine is off, that's a control unit problem.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Looks like tour ac was cooling just fine at the one you pulled the numbers. You didn't tell me what problem you're experiencing. I see that your evaporator temperature sensor is faulty. That will cause erratic cooling. I recommend replacing that sensor. Google "w210 evaporator temperature sensor" for more details on how to replace it.
The rest of the numbers look okay. Neither of the error codes are a problem.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Hello Blake,

If you can help me figure this out, beer money is on the way....

Ok, here are my values:

1:78
2:69
3:35
4:35
5:114
6:118
7:09
8:84

Error Codes

E61 : 234
E61 : 459
E : FF

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Blake, Back again. You solved a problem I had on my 1999 E430 last Summer, making the case I bought you seem dirt cheap. But now I have another and this one is strange.

Both the heater and AC now seem to have a mind of their own. When I start the car, at first no matter where the temperatures are set; nothing happens. If I set the temp for either heat or AC and turn up the fan, nothing happens. If I leave it alone and keep on driving, half the time the fan will come on full blast at any time and it will either heat or cool like normal (the other half it won't come on at all) . Now if I keep on driving for a while and the temp is correct to the settings. It might or might not go off on its own. But if when I get to my destination, if the fan is blowing. It will continue blowing even after the engine is shut off and the key is out of the ignition. Usually when this last happens, it will continue to run until the battery goes dead. Or I can unplug the fan under the passenger side dash.

While I don't think this has anything to do with codes. I took them anyway.

1 75
2. 78
3. 75
4. 75
5. 69
6. 152
7. 05
8. 73

No Trouble codes

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Nice resource, but -- what could be the problem with my 1997 w210 E420 if I can't access the diagnostic codes through the CCU head (used to be able to). Recharging the system should fix the problem. Error code B1241 often causes the 'EC' light to remain on. You can clear the error codes by pressing both AUTO buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds while in the error code retrieval mode.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Hi Blake,

sent you some beermoney but I am not shure, whether it had functioned! I'd start there.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Simon,

You definitely need a recharge. A vacuum test is part of "evacuation" phase of the normal recharge process. Assuming it passes the vacuum test, the shop will charge it with refrigerant that includes fluorescent dye. If it leaks out, they can locate the source of the leak with a UV light.
The EC light is stuck on because you don't have enough refrigerant in the system. Clearing the codes will reset the light and allow the A/C to turn on. If you reset the codes before you recharge, you may get a short amount of cooling (could be anywhere from seconds to days) before the light comes back on.
To clear the codes, go back into the error code retrieval mode and press both AUTO buttons for 5 seconds. The screen will show E FF, indicating the end of the list. At that point, shut the key off.
The other codes are benign.

Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Hi,
I left a message here a month or so ago but maybe it got lost... For a month or so I have a problem with the AC on my 1999 E320. In the weeks before, I had noticed a slight hissing sound from the vents when the AC was on. When I pushed the EC button (because it was fall and I didn't actually need cooling) the sound went away. Then, a month ago, I noticed that the EC light would not go off any more when pushing the button. I then followed the instructions on this site and got the following values: 1--67; 2--55; 3--130; 4--120; 5--120; 6--139; 7--04; 8--71.
In addition, I read out the following error codes: Eb 1234; Eb1416; Eb1459; Eb1241; E FF.
In the weeks since, I have occasionally checked value no. 7 while driving, and it kept showing either 03, 02, or 04. So I guess I need at least a recharge, but would a leak test also make sense? And do these codes contain any other useful information?
Cheers,
Simon

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

hi there I got e430 1999 japanies car on week before - and the control panel for ac built in with TV and navigation system written in japanies langauge I did set the langauge to english but some msg come on japanies - any way I have same problem on AC -ec light comes on never off by press the bottom - I went to a electric scanner shop he he rest it - the light come off then I recharge the AC . while I am back to home happy end the EC light come back again on .with same situation as before . You almost certainly need a recharge and leak check. Sometimes the pressure is reported falsely low by a faulty sensor. That would be obvious at the time of charging if the system indeed had pressure.
If your blower is very slow, that's almost always a blower moor regulator problem. Google w210 blower motor regulator replacement for DIY instructions.
Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Trent,

It looks like you need a recharge.

Blake

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Gustavo,

I was reconciling my email an PayPal and I couldn't tell if I had replied to you yet. If I had not, my apologies.
I assume the problem is that you're getting warm air It looks like you need a recharge. However it's hard to be certain with those error codes present. I recommend that you clear the error codes by ping back into the error code retrieval mode an pressing both auto buttons for 5 seconds. Sometimes stores error codes prevent the Yates from working properly. This will also help figure out if you have faulty sensors since any codes that rerun after clearing are usually genuine.
Blakr

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Blake, My CLK 430 '02 has me confused. Only the defrost comes on. When I do the error codes, I can't get past 1. I get that and the inside temp. Is the panel bad? Freon's perfect, etc. Yes, compressor does kick on when I hit defrost, but with defrost off, nothing happens. No fan, no air, nada! Ideas? Beer's chillin'. bv

Re: W210 Air Conditioning Diagnosis

Kurt,

Thank you for the beer. I looked at your error codes and sensors. You have a faulty evaporator temperature sensor. This will cause very erratic air-conditioner activity. Google W-2 10 evaporator temperature sensor replacement for pictures and instructions on how to replace this.
Note that when it is cool outside and the heat is on, it will be very difficult to determine whether the air conditioner is actually working by feel. Your numbers showed that the heat was on. To force the heat to turn off, set both sides too LO.
It is possible that you might need to recharge, but I can't tell when the evaporator temperature sensor is faulty.
Blake
